Atoms & Molecules

Swaimah – Atoms and Molecules

Today for Inquiry I did Atoms & Molecules. It was really fun doing this inquiry tasks because I got to create my very own Water molecule H20. I’m really sorry that i couldn’t put the document on my blog because the blog won’t let me show the pictures. Please leave a positive comment on my blog.

Pseudoscience

Pseudoscience Task

Walt: Find and link information across a range of texts

Task

Work on this Doc together with a partner.

What was the author’s main message in pseudoscience

Pseudoscience is something that sounds scientific but isn’t based on solid evidence. Pseudoscience can often be found in advertising. Advertisements that contain facts or figures are powerful because people usually believe information that’s based on facts. But if you look a bit closer, you might find that you have been given only part of the story.

What are some of the differences between scientists and advertisers?

Scientists Advertisers
Has solid Evidence  Doesn’t have solid evidence
Gathers data  Shows facts

Write 3 sentences explaining something new you’ve learned from this reading.

Something new I learnt about this reading is that extra carrots don’t actually make you see better in the dark. The British soldiers didn’t want the Germans to know about their new radar so they tricked the Germans, by writing an article about the British Soldiers being given extra carrots so that they can see their enemies planes and night better. The Germans fell for the trick and the Germans actually ate extra carrots to make they night vision better.

        True or False

Statement True/False Page Number Evidence
A pseudonym is a false name True  3 For example, a “pseudonym” is a false name that people use instead of their real name.
Blackcurrants have vitamin D False  3 In the story all it talks about Blackcurrants is that they have only vitamin C and it doesn’t talk about vitamin D.
Flavanols help people remember things True & False 4 Flavanols do seem to help older people who have difficulty remembering things. But the process of turning cocoa beans into chocolate destroys the flavanols, so there is no evidence that chocolate helps with memory at all.
Scientists critique each other True 5 Scientists write so their work and ideas can be critiqued by other scientists.
Carrots have vitamin A True  6 Carrots have vitamin A in them, and vitamin A is important for healthy eyes.
Carrots help us see in the dark False  6 But eating extra carrots won’t improve your night vision.

Rust

Rust

Kia ora, My name is Swaimah and Today I will be writing about Rust. Rust is a type of corrosion, you can see rust in most places like on your bike, on metal, chains and anything that has stayed outside in the rain & air. Rust is a browny orange type colour. Rust is very common and it’s really hard to take off rust from metal & other stuff.

What Causes rust?

Water is the main cause of rust. Rusting is a specific example of corrosion, which occurs when Iron or steel reacts with oxygen and water.

Iron + Oxygen + Water = Hydrated Iron oxide

Hydrated Iron oxide is the orange-brown substance seen on the surface of rust objects.  rust is more likely to occur on metal that has not been treated or protected against moisture. Salt also helps to speed up the rusting process.

Types of Rust

Red rust: This type of rust is formed when the metal surface is exposed to high amounts of oxygen or water. The corrosion taking place is uniform corrosion where an even layer of oxidation appears across the surface of the material. Red rust is a corrosion product. Yellow rust: This type of rust usually forms due to high exposure to moisture or water or metals that are found in large amounts of standing water. Brown rust: This type of rust takes place when the supply of oxygen is more and the supply of moisture is less. Black rust: This type of rust forms when limited oxygen is applied or when oxygen cannot reach the metal and is trapped or covered by another metal. This type of rust is not very common and is not produced quickly.

Treatment

Rust treatment is a topical compound designed to address the symptoms of rust. Rust treatment is the action of corrosion protection via anti-rust methods. Unlike rust prevention, which deals with measures to prevent or slow down the formation of rust, rust treatment deals with the removal and coating of rusty matter on surfaces where it is unwanted. Rust can be removed from small objects by performing electrolysis using simple equipment used in the home, such as a plastic bucket, tap water, washing soda, or battery.

Conclusion

Corrosion is defined as the transformation of metal into another form when it is exposed to sunlight and water for a long time. The corrosion of iron is commonly known as rusting and can be prevented by applying oil on its surface. This experiment therefore clearly shows that each metal behaves and reacts in a manner distinct to that metal in any particular environment.

Fast Rust Task

Fast Rust Task

What 3 ingredients are needed for rust to occur.

Iron  Water Oxygen from the air

Write a brief paragraph explaining the rusting process (why rusting occurs)

1. Oxygen from the air mixes with the water

2. The Iron surface of the nail reacts with the oxygen mixed in the water. It forms iron oxide

3. Iron oxide reacts with the water. It forms hydrated Iron oxide – The red stuff we call “rust”

4. This process continues until all the Iron is eaten up

How could you prevent something from rusting?

You can protect metal from rust by, covering with paint, coating oil or even plastic, this helps prevent rust from metal, but if the metal were in water for example the harbour bridge which is located in New Zealand is made out of steel and is in salt water, The first half of steel is not in water. Therefore it gets coated with paint at least three times. But the bottom of the harbour bridge which is the other half of the steel has to get coated more than three times because of how it is easier and faster for the rust to process.

Write 3 sentences explaining something new you’ve learned from this reading.

Something new I’ve learnt from this reading is that Iron is soft and to make Iron useful  you need to combine carbon to Iron to make Iron Alloy.

Something new I’ve learnt from this reading is that Iron is the fourth most common element in the universe.

Something new I’ve learnt from this reading is that Steel rusts faster or slower in different environments. Sometimes, it can take years for a piece of steel to rust.

Write down any new words you found in Fast Rust or the article about rust. Make sure you learn what the word means and write down a definition you understand for each new word.
