Seventh Grade – Doc

Seventh Grade – Gary Soto

First some questions
Answer the following questions about Seventh Grade

What Background information do you learn about Victor?
Victor is in seventh grade, He likes a girl called Teresa, He doesn’t enjoy maths, He has a friend called Micheal, He speaks Spanish and English.

When the boys scowl, the girls look at them. What might the girls think?
Because if the boys scowl the girls will love/like them. The girls will all fall in love with the boys. Girls love when boys scowl.

What obstacles are getting in the way of Victor making Teresa “his girl”?
Him allowing anything that Teresa needs help with, for example: Teresa needed help on her French homework and Victor said yes he would help her.
How does the tension increase now that Victor and Teresa are in the same class together?
That Victor can impress/show off to Teresa how good he is at French. Victor can help Teresa with the work and be a good boy.

Why did the teacher turn his back and walk to the blackboard?
Because Victor raised his hand and said he knew how to speak French but he actually couldn’t speak French at all. The teacher then went to the blackboard and read out some French words and told the class to repeat after him.

The French teacher, Mr Bueller realises that Victor is faking his knowledge of French, yet he does not let on about it. What impression does Mr. Bueller’s action tell you about him as a person and as a teacher?
Mr. Bueller as a teacher he sounds cool because Victor didn’t really know French and Victor thought it was a good idea to say some random words, Mr. Bueller didn’t tell Victor that he was saying random words, Mr. Bueller was basically not embarrassing Victor.

I think Mr. Bueller is a good person, Because he has been through what Victor has been through, so I think Mr. Bueller is a really good and motivated person.

Fast Rust

Fast Rust Task

What 3 ingredients are needed for rust to occur.

Iron  Water Oxygen from the air

Write a brief paragraph explaining the rusting process (why rusting occurs)

                                                          1. Oxygen from the air mixes with the water

                    2. The Iron surface of the nail reacts with the oxygen mixed in the water. It forms iron oxide

                    3. Iron oxide reacts with the water. It forms hydrated Iron oxide – The red stuff we call “rust”

                                                       4. This process continues until all the Iron is eaten up

How could you prevent something from rusting?

You can protect metal from rust by, covering with paint, coating oil or even plastic, this helps prevent rust from            metal, but if the metal were in water for example the harbour bridge which is located in New Zealand is made out          of steel and is in salt water, The first half of steel is not in water. Therefore it gets coated with paint at least three            times. But the bottom of the harbour bridge which is the other half of the steel has to get coated more than three            times because of how it is easier and faster for the rust to process.

Write 3 sentences explaining something new you’ve learned from this reading.

Something new I’ve learnt from this reading is that Iron is soft and to make Iron useful  you need to combine carbon to Iron to make Iron Alloy. Something new I’ve learnt from this reading is that Iron is the fourth most common element in the universe.

Something new I’ve learnt from this reading is that Steel rusts faster or slower in different environments. Sometimes, it can take years for a piece of steel to rust.

Write down any new words you found in Fast Rust or the article about rust. Make sure you learn what the word means and write down a definition you understand for each new word.

What was the author’s main message in pseudoscience

Pseudoscience is something that sounds scientific but isn’t based on solid evidence. Pseudoscience can often be found in advertising. Advertisements that contain facts or figures are powerful because people usually believe information that’s based on facts. But if you look a bit closer, you might find that you have been given only part of the story.

What are some of the differences between scientists and advertisers?

                                                                   Scientists               Advertisers

Write 3 sentences explaining something new you’ve learned from this reading.

Something new I learnt about this reading is that extra carrots don’t actually make you see better in the dark. The British soldiers didn’t want the Germans to know about their new radar so they tricked the Germans, by writing an article about the British Soldiers being given extra carrots so that they can see their enemies planes and night better. The Germans fell for the trick and the Germans actually ate extra carrots to make they night vision better.

Flavanols help people remember things True & False 4 Flavanols do seem to help older people who have difficulty remembering things. But the process of turning cocoa beans into chocolate destroys the flavanols, so there is no evidence that chocolate helps with memory at all.
Scientists critique each other True 5 Scientists write so their work and ideas can be critiqued by other scientists.
Carrots have vitamin A True  6 Carrots have vitamin A in them, and vitamin A is important for healthy eyes.

Dork Diaries – Drama Queen

Today for SSR ( silent sustained reading) I choose the book Dork Diaries – Drama queen by Rachel Renee Russell.

This book is the ninth book in the Dork Diaries series and it was by far my favourite! It starts off the main character Nikki Maxwell having a terrible day. Her worst enemy Mackenzie Hollister has been spreading dreadful rumours; she may have just stopped there ever being a chance that her crush Brandon Roberts will ever like her and now she has to go find a new goldfish for her bratty little sister Brianna.

However while she is there, she discovers that the rumour Mackenzie made up has 99% chance of being true! She goes to her best friends Chloe and Zoey for help – could it be true? They go on a mission, but just as they figure it out Nikki’s most prized possession GOES MISSING! And drama queen Mackenzie takes over… HER DIARY!

I really enjoyed this book: I couldn’t put it down! I would recommend it for 9+ girls mostly, but also for boys. The illustrations where phenomenal as well and I would definitely encourage people to get started reading the Dork Diaries series – especially this one! I would rate it 5 stars!
