Fast Rust Task

Fast Rust Task

What 3 ingredients are needed for rust to occur.

Iron  Water Oxygen from the air

Write a brief paragraph explaining the rusting process (why rusting occurs)

1. Oxygen from the air mixes with the water

2. The Iron surface of the nail reacts with the oxygen mixed in the water. It forms iron oxide

3. Iron oxide reacts with the water. It forms hydrated Iron oxide – The red stuff we call “rust”

4. This process continues until all the Iron is eaten up

How could you prevent something from rusting?

You can protect metal from rust by, covering with paint, coating oil or even plastic, this helps prevent rust from metal, but if the metal were in water for example the harbour bridge which is located in New Zealand is made out of steel and is in salt water, The first half of steel is not in water. Therefore it gets coated with paint at least three times. But the bottom of the harbour bridge which is the other half of the steel has to get coated more than three times because of how it is easier and faster for the rust to process.

Write 3 sentences explaining something new you’ve learned from this reading.

Something new I’ve learnt from this reading is that Iron is soft and to make Iron useful  you need to combine carbon to Iron to make Iron Alloy.

Something new I’ve learnt from this reading is that Iron is the fourth most common element in the universe.

Something new I’ve learnt from this reading is that Steel rusts faster or slower in different environments. Sometimes, it can take years for a piece of steel to rust.

Write down any new words you found in Fast Rust or the article about rust. Make sure you learn what the word means and write down a definition you understand for each new word.

Word Definition
Corrosion A breakdown of materials due to a chemical action like rusting.
Element  In chemistry, The simplest form of a substance, which cannot be broken down by chemicals into anything simpler
Silhouettes   A picture which is all black with no colour and only outlines
Corrode  To be eaten away by a chemical action (such as rusting)
Rate How quickly somethings happens (speed)
Alloy A metal mixed with another element to make the metal stronger or more resistant to corrosion
Compound  A combination of two or more elements bonded together

Ground Rules for Talk – The Fight

Today for reading I completed the The Fight- Ground rules.  love this task because i get to skim and scan to look for the answers in the book. This slideshow was really easy to complete and I think we should do more of this type of reaing. Please leave a positive comment on my blog. Thank you!

Matter #3

What’s the Matter?

3: We are learning to explain what happens to materials when they are heated and cooled.

When particles are heated they:

When the water temperature is hot the particles move really fast

When particles are cooled they:

When the water temperature is cold the particles move really slower

Experiment:  Fill one beaker with hot water and one with cold water. Add one drop of food colouring to each.

Which beaker does the food colouring move around faster in?

Why does this happen?

What does this have to do with building houses?

When the particles have more energy they take up more space. This is why things expand or get bigger when they are heated and contract or get smaller when they get cold. When building, architects need to think about how much the materials may expand in the heat of the summer and contract in the cold winter months. Metal railway tracks have small gaps so that when the sun heats them, the tracks expand into these gaps and don’t buckle.

Why are there bumps or small gaps in the harbour bridge?

The Harbour bridge has small gaps so that when the sun heats them, the tracks expand into these gaps and don’t buckle.

Hypothesis

I think when you do the experiment the food colouring in the hot water will move fast and it will eventually stop in about a minute or so. The food colouring in the cold water will just sink in the bottom of the cup and it won’t move at all.

The Fight- Respond to the text

Today for reading I completed the The Fight- Respond to the text.  love this task because i get to skim and scan to look for the answers in the book. This slideshow was really easy to complete and I think we should do more of responding to texts. Please leave a positive comment on my blog. Thank you!

What’s the matter? #2 – Science

Swaimah – What’s the matter_ – #2

Task Description: Today for inquiry/science I did What’s the Matter? #2. It was really easy and fun doing this task. I enjoyed this task very much because i got to learn a lot from this small document. I’m sorry but i had to put this on a google page thing. the pictures wouldn’t show up on my blog. Please leave a positive comment on my blog. Thank you!
