The Treaty of Waitangi – Before it was signed

The Treaty of Waitangi – Before it was signed

Introduction

Kia ora, My Name is Swaimah and today I will be talking to you about before the treaty of Waitangi. Did you know that the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 and was an agreement between the British Crown and a large number of Māori chiefs. How do you feel about the Māori people and the British people signing the treaty of Waitangi? To be honest I think it was quite incredible because I have never seen people from different countries accepting to make a treaty for a land or country. On 6 February 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands by Captain William Hobson, several English residents, and between 43 and 46 Māori rangatira.

Early 1800s

Burgeoning trade marked early contact between the peoples. Whalers, sealers and ship-builders who plundered forests for masts, interacted with coastal Maori villagers. Soon timber, flax and trading blossomed too. A relationship of coexistence developed – the Europeans relied on Maori for provisions and access to valuable resources; Maori wanted European goods such as scissors, mirrors, nails, blankets, tobacco and – later – muskets. Misunderstandings, however, occurred and murder bloodied the land. Late in 1809, the ship Boyd arrived in Whangaroa Harbour to collect a cargo of timber spars.

1809s

Later they attacked and burned the ship. A whaling ship arrived to exact revenge but wrongly attacked villagers of a chief who had tried to help. The incident represented the worst aspects of those early contacts – the Boyd crew did not know local Maori were suspicious of Europeans after an earlier ship visit led to a disease outbreak. The cannibalism set back perspectives of Maori as a noble race. In an act of utu (revenge) local Maori lured the captain ashore where they murdered and ate him and other crew. On board a young chief, Te Ara, had complained of mistreatment during the voyage from Sydney.

1820s

Perhaps the Maori leader who most fearlessly welcomed trade and contact with Europeans was Ngapuhi chief Hongi Hika. in 1814, he travelled to Sydney and in 1820 he and young chief Waikato set off to England on board the whaling ship, New Zealander. Accompanied by missionary Thomas Kendall, He spent 5 months in London and Cambridge. He assisted Professor Samuel Lee to compile the first Maori English dictionary, wowed many with his intelligence, personality and his moko was introduced to King George IV. The trip almost enabled Hika to amass a stockpile of guns which tipped the balance of inter-tribal power.

1830s

A crass commercial deal struck between Captain William Stewart, commander of the brig Elizabeth, and Ngati Toa chief Te Rauparaha was a tipping point leading the colonial Government in New South Wales to become convinced Britain needed a stronger official presence in New Zealand. For the price of a cargo of flax, Stewart agreed to transport a Ngati Toa war party from their base in Kapiti Island to Banks Peninsula for an attack on Ngai Tahu. Stewart invited Te Maiharanui aboard where he was ambushed by Te Rauparaha and his men. Bloodshed followed when Te Maiharanui’s village was attacked.

Conclusion

I feel like I’ve learned a lot today from this writing assignment. I really enjoyed reading some interesting facts about before the treaty of waitangi was signed. How do you feel about the early 1800s? I actually found it interesting because Maori people wanted the Europeans goods such as scissors, mirrors, nails, baskets, tobacco and more. Next time hopefully I get to do this writing again but, about after the treaty of Waitangi was signed. This is where I found all my information from: NZ Hearld. I hope you guys really enjoyed my Writing and hope you guys come back again. Ka kite!

Kōwhai Drawing – Kick Start

Today for the SLJ I did Kōwhai Drawing – Kick Start. It was really fun drawing this type of flower and knowing some facts about Kōwhai’s! Here are some facts that I’ve learnt about Kowhai’s.

Fact 1: Kowhai’s are best known for their brilliant yellow flowers that appear in profusion in Spring and stand out among the forest greenery.

Fact 2: Trees of this Kowhai’s are long lived with one proven to be 460 years old and others thought to be up to 1800 years old.

Fact 3:  The bark of the kowhai tree can be used in a bath to help with bruising and has long been used by Māori to help with broken bones as well as itching, shingles, and dandruff.

Thank you very much Michelle Tate for making this task I’ve really enjoyed it!

Seaside Stories – Step it up!

Seaside Stories

I am writing a story based on this picture here!

Warning!: Not based on a true story – I made this up!

Information about the story

This story is about me and my family going to this beach where no one goes and exploring the beach to see if there’s anything mysterious. My family was shocked when they saw the mysterious problem. They tried to help but couldn’t do anything. Until they had a really big plan in mind.

Stay tune to read the story

Warning!: Not based on a true story – I made this up!

Enjoy the story

Part 1

One day, me and my family went to the beach. We went to this beach that nobody goes to. And I’m Serious like where nobody goes. When we went it was so empty. Not even one person was there! I asked my dad “ Dad, why doesn’t anyone come here?”.

My dad replies “Sweetheart, everyone thinks this beach is a mysterious beach, They think that this beach is so scary and creepy”. “Oh, I get it! Can we explore it?” I said “We sure can, that’s why we’re here today”. The beach was called the mysterious beach.

It didn’t look that scary to me though. I was really excited to explore this cool beach. It was so lovely, quiet but messy. It was a nice teal colour of water. My siblings were excited too!We went to the car to grab some equipment to explore the beach. We grabbed 5 shovels, 5 metal detectors, some gloves and 5 magnifying glasses

My mum, my baby sister and my big brother weren’t coming because they went to my cousin’s house. We first started to grab the metal detectors and scan the sand to see if there were any metals, jewellery and more.We scanned for about one hour and we found a lot of things. We found metal cans, a lot of jewellery, some coins, and a treasure chest

Part 2

My siblings were confused. My dad asked “ Who found this treasure chest?”. I replied “ Me dad Me, I did!”. My dad was confused and said “ Where did you find it hunny?”. I said “ right here, Right here under the water of the beach”.

We started to scan more around the beach and in the water. We found A LOT of treasure chest. We opened the treasure chests all up and in each treasure chest, there was a piece of note that we had to put all together to create a note.

The note said “ grab some magnifying glasses and look far down where the flag is in the water”. We looked and we sawed the red flag. We went to grab our magnifying glasses and looked at the red flag

THERE WAS SOMETHING REALLY SHOCKING!There was a mermaid! She was crying but I didn’t know why. SO I told my dad “ Hey dad let’s go get the jet skis to reuse the poor mermaid”.

My dad said “ alright let’s go”. We went to grab the jet skis and went into the water to save the mermaid. When we arrived at the red flag the mermaid disappeared

I was so scared that the mermaid might have been hurt! We looked around into the distance to see if the mermaid was around. My dad sawed a pirate boat. We headed to that boat and sawed the mermaid tied up! I was really Scared at first. Everything started to get weird.

Part 3

Then an evil pirate jumped up and said “ You mighty people have no respect for us pirates, We are going to kidnap you all one day! Hehe”. I was shaking! I asked, “What is your name?” My name is Ace” Replied the pirate. “Wait but how do we not give respect to you pirates? You guys are basically humans like us” I said.

The pirate replied “ You guys don’t even give us a house to live in, that’s how disrespectful you humans are!” – “ You pirates never tell us that you want a house to live in,” Said my brother yunas. The pirate gets angry and yells “ I WILL RULE THE WHOLE EARTH, AND MAKE YOU PEOPLE TURN INTO ALIENS!” My family and I were really shocked at what he said.

“Wait before we leave, can we at least have the mermaid?” I asked. He angrily said” NO YOU CAN’T SHES MINE FOREVER GRRRR!” I was shocked! I was mind blown and scared! We called 1-1-1 and they didn’t even come because of how weird the beach was.

I was so annoyed by this nonsense. So what I did was take a video of the mermaid in the pirate boat, and post it online on facebook. IT WENT VIRAL! Everyone still didn’t believe it.

!!!!THE END!!!!
